Bateas Mining concludes its 2024 Participatory Environmental Monitoring Plan with a technical visit to the SGS laboratory in Arequipa.
Minera Bateas completed its 2024 Participatory Environmental Monitoring Plan with a technical visit to the SGS del Perú environmental laboratory in Arequipa, marking the first time community representatives have accessed these facilities to learn about the environmental analysis processes firsthand.
The monitoring, conducted on November 25 and 26 in the San Francisco area, included the participation of local authorities, community leaders, members of the Participatory Environmental Monitoring and Surveillance Committee (CMVAP), and residents. The monitoring criteria included air quality, soil quality, hydrobiology, surface water, and effluent quality, fulfilling the commitments established in the second Amendment to the Bateas Environmental Impact Study (EIA) . This initiative promotes community participation in compliance with standards, performance evaluation, and environmental education.
Sampling was conducted at key locations such as the Santiago River and Tailings Facility No. 3, under the supervision of SGS and Bateas specialists , who ensured the proper application of quality protocols. Community representatives participated in data collection, guided by the technical team, strengthening their understanding of environmental monitoring processes.
As part of the process , a training workshop was held to explain the monitoring objectives, the matrices evaluated, the control points, and the laboratory's operation. During the activity, questions were answered and the importance of responsible natural resource management was highlighted.
On November 27, community representatives visited the SGS laboratory in Arequipa, where they observed the processing stages of the collected samples, from receipt and labeling to preparation and analysis, reinforcing the transparency of the process.
Attendees included Wilber Cayani , president of FUDICAY; Dina Fora , Wendy Maque, and Nicolás Zuni, members of CMVAP; Elizabeth Maque, councilor of the Caylloma District Municipality; Víctor Infa , district justice of the peace; and Lila Vela, head of the Environment at Minera Bateas.
"This activity not only concludes this year's Participatory Environmental Monitoring Plan, but also strengthens spaces for dialogue and transparency between the company, the community, and the environmental assessment processes," said Lila Vela.
